GPS is a convenience, not a capability. Participants learn to read terrain, work a map and compass, navigate by pace and bearing, and continue accurately at night or in poor visibility — then prove it on an assessed navigation exercise.

Training objectives

  • Navigate accurately without electronic aids.
  • Read and interpret terrain from a map.
  • Maintain direction at night.

What participants will learn

  • Map symbols, scale and grid references
  • Compass work, bearings and back-bearings
  • Pace counting and terrain association
  • Night navigation technique

Requirements

  • Minimum age 18, medically fit for physical activity.
  • Field-appropriate clothing and footwear for the season.
  • No prior experience required unless stated otherwise.
