GPS is a convenience, not a capability. Participants learn to read terrain, work a map and compass, navigate by pace and bearing, and continue accurately at night or in poor visibility — then prove it on an assessed navigation exercise.
Training objectives
- Navigate accurately without electronic aids.
- Read and interpret terrain from a map.
- Maintain direction at night.
What participants will learn
- Map symbols, scale and grid references
- Compass work, bearings and back-bearings
- Pace counting and terrain association
- Night navigation technique
Requirements
- Minimum age 18, medically fit for physical activity.
- Field-appropriate clothing and footwear for the season.
- No prior experience required unless stated otherwise.
